When frost accumulates on the walls of the freezer, it forms an insulating layer which causes a reduction in heat transfer between the air inside the freezer and the refrigeration system.
That said, for your appliance to maintain the indoor temperature at the same level, it must consume more energy.
In addition to causing excess energy consumption, the accumulation of frost leads to poor preservation of food and reduces the lifespan of the freezer.
Also note that a layer of frost of just 3 millimeters increases the freezer’s power consumption by 30 to 40%. That said, it is recommended to defrost the freezer as soon as the layer of frost reaches 2 to 3 millimeters.
How to defrost the freezer quickly?
Before defrosting the freezer, you must first unplug it or put it in standby mode, in order to avoid incidents.
Also remember to empty your freezer and store your food in coolers or insulated bags, to keep them frozen while you defrost your appliance.
However, be careful to avoid using a hammer or sharp objects to dislodge the ice. This could puncture or puncture the freezer walls.
Instead, use a wooden or plastic spatula. Also, don’t forget to put a mop at the bottom of the freezer to mop up any water that will spill.
