Directions
1. In a bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece slightly, place a tablespoon of grated cheese in the center, and fold the dough around it to form a bun.
6. Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with a bit of milk or beaten egg for a nice golden finish.
8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and the cheese is oozing out.
9. Allow to cool slightly before serving, to enjoy them at their melty best.
Variations & Tips
You can experiment with different types of cheese to create your favorite flavor combination. Try adding herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough for an aromatic twist. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, incorporate some chopped jalapeños or a pinch of chili flakes into the cheese filling. These buns also freeze well; simply reheat them in a warm oven to bring back their freshly baked charm.
