Air Fryer Blooming Onion

Instructions

1. Prep the Onion

  1. Cut off the top of the onion (not the root) and peel away the outer skin.
  2. Place the onion root-side down and make 8-12 cuts from the top, down to about ½ inch from the root, creating “petals.” Gently separate the layers without breaking them.

2. Prepare the Coating

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk to create an egg wash.

3. Coat the Onion

  1. Dip the onion into the flour mixture, ensuring all the petals are well-coated. Shake off excess flour.
  2. Submerge the onion in the egg wash, making sure the egg mixture reaches all the layers.
  3. Dip the onion back into the flour mixture for a second coat. For added crunch, sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the onion.

4. Air Fry the Onion

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes.
  2. Lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  3. Place the coated onion in the basket root-side down. Spray the onion generously with cooking oil.
  4. Air fry for 20-25 minutes, checking halfway through to ensure even cooking. The onion should be golden brown and crispy when done.

5. Serve

  1. Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer using tongs.
  2. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, garlic aioli, or spicy mayo.

Tips for Success

  • Cut Carefully: Use a sharp knife for clean cuts when creating the petals.
  • Even Coating: Ensure every layer is coated thoroughly for maximum crunch.
  • Spray Generously: A light coating of cooking spray helps achieve the crispy texture.
