Instructions
1. Prep the Onion
- Cut off the top of the onion (not the root) and peel away the outer skin.
- Place the onion root-side down and make 8-12 cuts from the top, down to about ½ inch from the root, creating “petals.” Gently separate the layers without breaking them.
2. Prepare the Coating
- In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk to create an egg wash.
3. Coat the Onion
- Dip the onion into the flour mixture, ensuring all the petals are well-coated. Shake off excess flour.
- Submerge the onion in the egg wash, making sure the egg mixture reaches all the layers.
- Dip the onion back into the flour mixture for a second coat. For added crunch, sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the onion.
4. Air Fry the Onion
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes.
- Lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Place the coated onion in the basket root-side down. Spray the onion generously with cooking oil.
- Air fry for 20-25 minutes, checking halfway through to ensure even cooking. The onion should be golden brown and crispy when done.
5. Serve
- Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer using tongs.
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, garlic aioli, or spicy mayo.
Tips for Success
- Cut Carefully: Use a sharp knife for clean cuts when creating the petals.
- Even Coating: Ensure every layer is coated thoroughly for maximum crunch.
- Spray Generously: A light coating of cooking spray helps achieve the crispy texture.
