Velvety Apple Custard Cake

 

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 3 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (to prevent browning)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free version)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream

For the custard layer:

  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

For garnish (optional):

  • Powdered sugar
  • Whipped cream
  • Caramel sauce
  • Cinnamon
