Velvety Apple Custard Cake
Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 3 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (to prevent browning)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free version)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
For the custard layer:
- 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
For garnish (optional):
- Powdered sugar
- Whipped cream
- Caramel sauce
- Cinnamon
