I’m 18 weeks pregnant and got this horrible rash on my legs. Itchy and bumpy skin. Can’t get an OB appt quickly. What can I do for relief?
Pregnancy brings about a host of changes in a woman’s body, including the skin. Hormonal fluctuations, increased blood volume, and changes in the immune system can lead to various skin conditions. Some women experience a ‘pregnancy glow,’ while others may face challenges such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or rashes. Understanding these changes is crucial for managing them effectively.
Common Causes of Rashes During Pregnancy
Rashes during pregnancy can be caused by several factors. Common causes include PUPPP (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy), which typically appears in the third trimester, and prurigo of pregnancy, which can occur at any time. Hormonal changes can also exacerbate existing skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Allergic reactions to foods or skincare products may also cause rashes.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
While most pregnancy-related rashes are harmless, some require immediate medical attention. If you experience symptoms such as severe itching without a rash, jaundice, or if the rash is accompanied by fever, blisters, or pain, it is essential to seek medical care promptly. These could be signs of more serious conditions like cholestasis of pregnancy or infections.
